LASIK
Surgical correction of myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism are now possible with laser beams, and can be performed predictably and safely, compared to results using older techniques. According to those who have had the surgery, the freedom from the necessity of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses is priceless. There is, of course, a price, which is approximately $4000.
This cost, moreover, must be balanced against a lifetime of replacement eyeglasses or contact lenses, not to mention the cost of maintenance, such as repair, cleaning solutions, cases, etc. With contact lenses, there is always a chance of infections (which sometimes can be severe), and corneal abrasions (which can be quite painful and debilitating).
The procedure itself can be done as an outpatient. Two follow up appointments are necessary, one on the day following the operation and another a few days later. As of this writing, the cost of obtaining this procedure is approximately 15-20% less than the cost in Japan.
