Laparoscopic Surgery

Surgeons have performed many procedures over the years using optical devices to visualize the interior of the human body. The interest came to a peak when a surgeon in Paris figured out a way to perform gallbladder surgery through a laparoscope. Cholecystectomy, or removal of the gallbladder is the most frequently performed operation in the US, numbering over 500,000 every year. A surgeon in the US, Dr. Eddie Reddick, brought home the laparoscopic technic in the early 1980's. Since then, an explosion in the technological know-how followed.

Operations on the gallbladder, intestines, hernias, and gynecological organs such as the ovaries and the Fallopian tubes, are now routinely performed by the surgeons at NMC via the laparoscope. In addition, some orthopedic procedures, even complicated reconstructive operations, are now routinely done via arthroscopy. Research is now progressing to enable visualization of the insides of such small structures such as tear ducts and arterial blood vessels.

Of course, this type of surgical approach is not for every patient, but in selected cases, this technic has many advantages. Some of them are reduction in pain, earlier return to normal activity, more cosmetic scars, and in some cases superior results. Please inquire with our clinic about the availability of these procedures.
